Playa del Carmen – Paradise in Mexico
Mexico, the country of 109 million people makes for a great vacation destination any time of the year! Other than the exciting city of Mexico, the natural beauty of twenty six UNESCO declared world heritage sites, ancient colonial charm, old world buildings, exciting beaches, mangrove swamps and much more will leave the ardent traveler spell bound and a regular to this fantastic place. From the budget traveler to the extravagant there is a lot for everybody and no traveler is left complaining or feeling left out!
In one corner of this traveler’s paradise, lies the Yucatan Peninsula which offers the beach destination of Playa del Carmen. Playa as the locals call it is about 40 miles south of Cancun. If you are looking for soft and inviting white sand, quiet and gentle surf and action packed outdoor sports, then look no further; because Playa offers all this and much more! When the sun goes down, the temperatures soar as do the mood to party. The bars and restaurants come alive by about midnight and that is when the fun really starts.
To reach this sunny beach destination, you will need to land at the Cancun Airport and then make your way via a hired taxi or the ADO (local service) bus way. The weather in Playa varies from hot to warm all year round because of its sub tropical climatic conditions. The coolest months are November, December and January while from February to about May the temperatures are very pleasant.
This quiet sleepy fishing town of Playa is now a perfect mixture of the old and new, ancient and contemporary. This stark variety is quite visible when one walks through the Fifth Avenue or Quinta Avenida and moves on to the more conservative off beaten path of the city. The upscale Fifth Avenue offers plush restaurants, shopping destinations and many places of fun, while the slightly quieter side of the city offers a glimpse of the true Mexican style of food, living and clothing.
While spending the entire vacation time at one’s resort sounds fun, there are other places like the Chichen Itza, a popular ruin along the Peninsula, Tulam – a nearby beach, Cozumel – a great water sport activity area for snorkeling and scuba diving that offer for easy day trips. The white sand beach of course is the best place to relax, catch a tan, and pick up small trinkets as souvenirs!
So if you are looking at a few days of relaxed peace by the waters, gentle breeze of the waves and the sounds and smells of a beach, a visit to Playa is a must!
